European music therapy confederation
EMTC board, 2025 in Vienna
The European Confederation of Music Therapy was founded in 1990 as a forum to unite music therapists in Europe. It is an association of professional music therapy associations in Europe that coordinates cooperation and professional activities between member states. The mission of the organization is to respect a comprehensive common understanding and cooperation between music therapists from different countries in Europe, despite the fact that each country may have a different theoretical basis and methods used in music therapy.
Since 2004, the European Confederation of Music Therapy has a special status in Europe, it is registered as a professional, multinational organization with its own mission, statutes, membership register, code of ethics. The organization is governed by a board consisting of a core board – a president and two vice presidents – as well as regional coordinators representing the northern, southern and central regions of Europe.
Latvia is part of the Nordic Union of European countries, where it is located alongside Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Each member country is represented in this organization by one elected representative from their country. Countries with several professional associations (Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.) also nominate only one representative. Currently, EMTC unites music therapists from 34 European countries from 47 professional associations. The leaders of these countries make up the general assembly of the European Music Therapy Confederation. The Latvian Music Therapy Association has been in this organization since 2005 and its representative is Jana Duhovska.
The European Music Therapy Congress is organized once every three years. Latvian music therapy was also represented at the congresses in Finland (2004) and the Netherlands (2007) with both a stand and a scientific paper. The next congress will be held in Slovenia, in July 2028.
The organization is currently working on the creation of a single European Research Register (ERR) database and a single European Music Therapy Register (EMTR), which will register all accredited graduates of EMTC-accepted study programs and practicing music therapists and supervisors.
